Game Of Thrones: The Definitive Fashion Guide

Like it or not, Game of Thrones is back on our screens on Sky on Monday.
Prepare for more dramatic Facebook posts from obsessive friends on medieval love-triangles and speculation about who will be the next major character to lose a head.
We have created a fashion guide for three of our favourite G.O.T tribes that is so accurate that you could walk on set and they’ll think you are an extra! What clan are you, Night’s Watch, Targaryen or White Walker?!
Nights_watch_johnandpearlYou love grunge, feathers and tats. You only wear black. You are quite sensitive. Your clan includes a lot of hipsters; the Olsen Twins, Noel Fielding and Russell Brand. You are fiercely loyal and fond of crows and you probably own a dog, a big wolf-like dog. You know nothing.

D.I.Y Easter Eggs, Glitter and Blue Fingers

Happy Easter from J&P! We love being creative, so to celebrate the season of guilt-free mass chocolate consumption, we created a little stop-motion Easter video! Click below to play.

To make your own dyed eggs for Easter there are some great tutorials about. For hard boiled edible eggs check out the tutorial on brilliant blog Honestly YUM.

We used hollowed hen eggs but duck eggs (which are white, not brown to begin with) will give a brighter colour.

To do them like ours, follow these steps:-

  1. Prick holes in either end of the egg with a large needle, making a larger hole at the wide part of the egg then from the egg’s pointy end, blow hard to push all the yolk and white out over a bowl.
  2. Next you dye them in a bath of food colouring. Mix up 2 tbsp of white vinegar to one cup of hot water and about 12 drops of food colouring. (I got impatient and brushed the dye on, hence the blue fingers!)
  3. When the eggs are dyed to the desired colour, remove and allow to dry then flick with metallic paint and glitter to created speckles.

For our video, we went the extra mile and sawed them in half to create our pop-open eggs. The sawing is not easy at all and I wouldn’t recommend trying as the shells are so delicate! We used a jewellers saw and micro-fine blade and broke a few in the process!

Have a go and make some fun mess! Our prep pics are below.

1. Prick holes in the eggs                          2. Dye (or brush on dye)

3. Splatter with flecks (gold/blue etc)        4. Go create!

Maths For Your Health: Three Smoothies To Supercharge Your Morning

We are almost into Spring here in London but it is still a bit grey – let’s push through into summer with some delicious pastel-hued healthy smoothies!

We love colour at John & Pearl and drinking rainbow coloured juices is a fast and relatively fuss free way to get your 5-a-day, so here are our top blends.

To keep it simple I whipped up an infographic of twelve immunity boosting ingredients and three ways to use them. Personally – my favourite is the Coconana – inspired by a smoothie I LOVE from Rosie’s Cafe in Brixton, which is near our studio. (Go visit them – they do amazing stuff!)

Three Great Cafes for Creative Thinking

You’ll see us gazing into space and scratching sketches in our Moleskine notebooks. We are creative entrepreneurs and we are coming to a coffee shop near you.
There has been a massive rise in the number of people I have met recently doing it for themselves. I have friends working in London as fashion designers, photographers, video bloggers and writers. For all of us, either regularly or in the early stages of setting up, there is a shared need for space.
With rents in cities like London soaring, something great that has been born out of the lack of space, an emergence of mobile workers coming together in shared work environments; cafes saturated with creative thoughts and fingers tapping on Mac Books.
Cafes are catching on to the idea and creating collaborative hubs with snug sofas and artisanal coffee.
I travel around Europe quite a bit for fashion weeks and store visits so here are three of my favourite spots for inspiration seeking individuals to get out of the office and into creative head space.

AntiCafé – (multiple locations in Paris & Rome)anti-cafe-12

An ace cafe chain in Paris and Rome with a collaborative atmosphere openly targeting students and freelancers.

For few euros per hour they provide you unlimited with coffee and tea, snacks and fruits, fast Wi-Fi and access to a projector, printer, scanner and… board games! They will even let you bring in your own food/soft drinks.

Mitte – Carrer de Bailèn, 86 Barcelona
mitte
A great place for some peace off the busy Barcelona streets. They do coffee, cake, snacks, healthy looking lunches, cava and G&Ts in a lounge-y setting with plenty of comfy sofas. It is a mixed crowd with some people catching up over drinks, book clubs and a cute exhibition space that was a collaboration with a Japanese collective when we visited. The staff are great and are the right side of attentive, so you don’t feel like an inconvenience but do feel attended when you want to be.
Salt Cafe – Morningside, Edinburgh salt cafe

I am biased here because this place is my brother’s place, but it is definitely worthy of its place on this list. Although it says it is a cafe, Salt offer some really delicious locally sourced food from Scottish Langoustines to freshly baked cakes. During Edinburgh Festival in August, it is a great place to escape to madness and do some planning or have a casual working lunch. Check them out on Facebook and see for yourself!
